Welcome to SGP Insider the all new website and newsletter featuring expert news and views from the SailGP global high-performance yacht racing circuit.
We are launching SGP Insider from Beautiful Bermuda where the circuit’s nine top flight international teams have been practicing all week out on the Great Sound ahead of this weekend’s Season 3 opening event.
We have spent the last few days in an around the team bases, soaking up the atmosphere and getting the inside scoop from the sailors and coaches. There has been plenty of anticipation for this first event of Season 3 especially given that two new teams – Canada and Switzerland – have joined the league.
We also went out on the water for a close up view of Thursday and Friday’s practice racing when Tom Slingsby’s close knit Australian crew looked to be taking up at the same high level as they rounded out Season 2 six weeks ago with a million dollar victory in San Francisco.
Another on form team looked to be Peter Burling’s Kiwi team who looked more confident and assured around the racecourse and were amongst the front runners in virtually every race on both days.
Neither Ben Ainslie’s British squad nor Jimmy Spithill’s’ American crew have looked on top form during practice. The Brits looked generally out of sorts – uncharacteristically hesitant on the start line and less slick than normal around the course. Meanwhile, American’s looked similarly inconsistent – perhaps as a result of training up a new flight controller, Hans Henken – or perhaps just a bit of ring rustiness after the preseason downtime.
